Valerian is an herb that is quite popular for treating panic attacks. It is an underground stem or root of the valerian plant that is given to patients suffering from this condition.
According to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center use of this herb has a calming effect in patients who are undergoing severe stress. It is considered quite safe when used for short period of time.
However there are some common side effects such as upset stomach, dizziness and headache and some patients also complain of fatigue. As is the case with other herbs, it would be better to consult your doctor before going in for this herb.
A combination of two herbs, viz hawthorn and Eschscholtzia Californica along with magnesium can help to treat patients suffering from mild to moderate anxiety. It is literally free of side effects. But it would be better to consult a doctor before going in for it.
Passion flower is supposed to be another herb which can be as effective as benzodiazepine drugs and is known to relieve anxiety. The leaves, flowers and stems of this plant are used as herb. However, since the side effects have not been studied fully you should use it only after consulting your doctor.
There are some other herbs too which are used to treat panic attacks and they are Kava and St. John’s Wort. While the roots of Kava herb are made into capsules and other forms the yellow flowering tops of St John’s Wort are also used to make capsules for treating panic attacks.
